Your first Namibia self-drive: what to know before you go

Namibia rewards unhurried travellers. Respect the distances, fuel early and leave room in the day to stop when the landscape surprises you.

Plan realistic days

Gravel roads reduce your average speed. Avoid arriving after dark and allow time for photographs, wildlife and rest stops.

Fuel when you can

Top up in larger towns. Keep water and snacks in the vehicle, and tell your accommodation which route you plan to take.

Drive for the surface

Reduce speed on gravel, increase following distance and avoid sudden steering or braking. Slow down further as conditions change.
